How to Measure Your Space for Custom Mats (Without Expensive Mistakes)

Custom mats are built to the exact measurements you give us. If you hand us the wrong numbers, the mats arrive looking great but fitting wrong. Our terms are explicit: we build to your specs.

Here is how to measure right the first time.

Tools you need

  • A 25ft or 50ft tape measure (NOT a 12ft pocket one).
  • A friend.
  • A phone for photos.
  • Paper and pen (or our free Buyer’s Checklist).

Measure at the baseboards

Not across the middle of the room — baseboards define the real edge. Measure each wall end-to-end, and note any columns, alcoves, doorways, or raised platforms.

Double-check the diagonal

If your room is supposed to be square, the two diagonals should be equal. If they’re not, the room is a quadrilateral — send us both diagonals so we cut the mats to match. This is common in old buildings.

Photo every corner

From a few feet back, capture each corner so we can see doorjambs, floor transitions, and any weird cutouts. Upload these in the designer’s “Photos of your space” step. We render your design into those photos.

Common mistakes

  • Measuring over carpet or baseboard trim — always measure the hard floor surface.
  • Forgetting a 2′ safety perimeter in BJJ/Judo academies.
  • Assuming your room is rectangular when it isn’t.
  • Missing a column or pole — if we don’t know about it, we can’t wrap it.
