Three textures, three very different training experiences. Here is how to pick the right one for your space.
Tatami — the BJJ/Judo standard
Rice-grain texture. Gi-safe (no pilling), great grip on the feet, won’t slip on a throw. If you train with a gi, tatami is the default. Slight drawback: a little more drag on bare skin than smooth or dappled, so some no-gi academies prefer dappled.
Dappled — the quiet all-rounder
Fine dimpled pattern. Comfortable barefoot, subtle grip, easy to clean. A good middle ground for MMA spaces, home gyms, and kids academies where the floor gets used for drilling, rolling, and general movement. Our Drop In Mats ship in dappled by default.
Smooth — the gym-floor choice
Flat vulcanized rubber. Easy to wipe, handles dropped weights, supports machines and racks. This is what you want under a squat platform or a cardio bank — not under grappling. Smooth is our default for Gym Flooring.
Price?
Same across all three. Texture is a manufacturing choice, not a material cost delta. Pick the one your training actually calls for.
